How the estimate works

Gig workers are treated as self-employed. You pay self-employment tax (15.3%, applied to 92.35% of your net profit) plus federal and state income tax. Because nobody withholds it for you, the IRS expects quarterly estimated payments.

What lowers your bill

Mileage is usually the biggest write-off. The IRS rate for 2026 was 72.5 cents per mile through June and 76 cents from July 1, so this tool takes your miles for each half separately. It also prices the actual-expenses method and tells you which saves more. Half of your self-employment tax, health insurance premiums, retirement contributions, the 20% business income deduction and the new qualified tips deduction can all reduce your income tax.

What this estimate leaves out

  • City and county income taxes, and state credits beyond the standard deduction.
  • The refundable part of the child tax credit, the earned income credit and other credits.
  • Wage and equipment limits on the 20% business deduction at higher incomes.
  • Capital gains, interest, rental income and other income you did not enter.

It is an estimate for planning, not tax advice. Read the methodology for every figure and its source.

Frequently asked questions

Do gig workers have to pay quarterly taxes?

Usually yes. If you expect to owe $1,000 or more after withholding and credits, the IRS expects estimated payments four times a year (April 15, June 15, September 15 and January 15). Paying at least 90% of this year's tax, or 100% of last year's, generally avoids an underpayment penalty.

How much should I set aside for taxes as a driver or delivery worker?

It depends on your net profit, filing status and state, because mileage and other write-offs shrink the profit you are taxed on. Enter your numbers above: the calculator shows your all-in tax rate, the rate on your next dollar and how much to pay each quarter.

What is the 2026 IRS mileage rate?

The business rate was 72.5 cents per mile from January 1 to June 30, 2026, and 76 cents per mile from July 1. This calculator takes your miles for each half separately.

Are tips taxable for rideshare and delivery drivers?

Yes, tips are income and are included in self-employment tax. A new qualified tips deduction can lower your income tax by up to $25,000 for eligible work such as rideshare and delivery, with limits at higher incomes.

Does the calculator store my information?

No. Everything is calculated in your browser. Your entries are saved only on your own device so they are still there when you return, and you can clear them with Reset inputs.
